1. Diskit Gompa

Diskit Gompa (Diskit Monastery) is one of the most prominent attractions in Nubra Valley, Ladakh. Situated over the hill, on the plains of the Shayok river, it is a remarkable reflection of the Buddhist reverence in the region. It is known for its magnanimous structure and magnificent architecture. The way it crowns the hill provides tourists with a spectacular bird’s eye view of the region. It is also said to be one of the oldest monasteries in the valley as it was built as early as the 14th century.

The monastery is an abode to the status of the Crowned Buddha also known as Cho Rinpoche. One can also find several attention-grabbing depictions of the guardian deities. But, there’s nothing more startling than the 32 m tall statue of Maitreya Buddha seated over the monastery. If you stand at the base of the statue, you’ll get a breathtaking panoramic view of the Nubra valley. The best time to visit would be December as the Dosmoche festival is celebrated around this time, and you can taste the rich tradition of this marvelous site.

2. Yarab Tso Lake

The Yarab Tso Lake is another scenic treat you can enjoy in the Nubra valley, Ladakh. Pristine and fairly shallow, It is located at a small distance of about 15 km from  Diskit. The lake also has a certain religious significance attached to it, as per the local faith. The people living in Sumur and across the valley believe in the piousness and holiness of this waterboy. Needless to say. It’s a beyond-perfect location for taking pictures, with a backdrop of hilly ranges, greeneries, clear skies, all mirrored in the lake.

3. Hunder Sand Dunes Of Nubra Valley, Ladakh

It is fascinating how the chilling winds and rough terrains over also unfold as a strikingly beautiful cold desert, Hundar. This desert in Nubra Valley is popular for its mesmerizing landscape and the white sand dunes. It is also one of the highest deserts in the world. You’ll love the Bactrian camel rides amid the gorgeous scenery, a safari that’s synonymous with pure soul treat. You can also find quite a few tent camps here, however, given the extremely low temperatures, not every traveler may find it suitable. Alternatively, you can stay in a concrete room.


Another interesting activity here is quad biking. You can indulge in the thrilling act of riding a quad bike on the small mounds. The blend of rough rides and the soft winds you shall experience here is every rider’s dream.

4. Samstanling Gompa

This beautiful land of lamas is home to another awe-inspiring Gompa, Samstanling Gompa. Situated in the Sumur village of Ladakh, the gompa will drench you in serenity. Perhaps, the most striking feature of this structure is simplicity. Rooted in mystique mountains and roofed by the topaz blue sky, it will surely captivate your attention. What’s even more enjoyable is the odd 45 minutes long and steep trek that you’ll need to take to reach the monastery.

5. Panamik Village

Panamik Village is another generous setting situated in the northernmost part of Nubra Valley, Ladakh. It is 10,442 ft above sea level and is notably close to the Siachen Glacier and is popular for its cluster of hot springs, and most importantly, Ensa Monastery. This gompa is over two centuries old. You’ll also need special permits to visit this wonderful destination.  If you’re planning to grab those exquisitely made pashmina shawls, then this is the place.


No matter which part of the world you’re in, you must surely plan a trip to this heavenly destination of Nubra Valley, Ladakh.
